Canadians applying to medical school in the United States

Dear applicants,

I highly encourage Canadian medical school applicants to apply to the States. As you are very much aware, medical school admission is a competitive process. There are currently only 17 medical schools in Canada. You can increase your chances of success by applying to the 60+ medical schools in the United States that accept international students.

I encourage you to visit AAMC sign up link and register today. The best advice I can give is to apply early as the submission process opens early June 2016. Unlike Canadian  schools, the US medical schools follow a rolling admissions process. This means that applicants are admitted on a first come first serve basis with earlier applicants having the greatest opportunity for success.

Advice number 2: apply broadly! The application process is very unpredictable and the best way to give yourself a successful application cycle is to apply to a lot of schools. Aim for 25-30 schools. Some applicants apply to as many as 40 schools. The caveat is that this will be relatively expensive (~$2000 USD). However, consider that most applicants spend thousands on preparing for the MCAT (not to mention their undergraduate degree) and skimp out on when it really counts.

Last advice: Follow through on your dream. If you are passionate about becoming a physician and you have spent countless hours studying and volunteering, you should definitely follow through on making your dreams a reality. A lot of people give up when they are unsuccessful in their first attempts. If you truly want to become a doctor, you will work to make it happen and be willing to travel.

Side note: Register for an SDN (student doctor network) forums account. There is a treasure load of information that will help you throughout your application process.

Also, feel free to message me as I have been successful in applying to US medical schools.
